Why

Why Online?

Life doesn't always make it easy to get to a therapy room. Work schedules, childcare, travel, health, or simply living further afield can all make in-person sessions difficult to fit in — and I believe that shouldn't be a barrier to getting support.

Online counselling works exactly like my face-to-face therapy. The same session structure, the same confidentiality, the same approach. The difference is that we meet via a secure video call rather than in the same room — and you choose where you are.

How

How online counselling sessions work

Sessions take place via Teams or FaceTime, whichever you prefer. Before your first session I'll send you a link or contact details, along with a reminder the day before — so there's nothing complicated to set up.

Each session lasts 50 minutes. I'd recommend finding a quiet, private space where you won't be interrupted such as a bedroom, a parked car, or a spare room, anywhere you feel comfortable speaking freely. You'll need a phone, tablet, or laptop with a working camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection.

Everything said in an online session is fully confidential, just as it would be during in person counselling.

effectivness

Is online counselling as effective?

This is one of the questions I'm asked most often, and it's a fair one. The short answer is: for most people and most issues, yes.

Research consistently shows that online therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of difficulties including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems and grief. What matters most is the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client, and that can be built just as well through a screen.

Some clients actually prefer online. There's less travel, less disruption to the day, and for some the slight distance of a screen makes it easier to open up, particularly early on. Others find they miss the physical presence of being in a room together, and eventually transition to face-to-face sessions. Many stick with online throughout and find it works well throughout their time in therapy.

If you're not sure which would suit you, we can talk about it in the free initial call and there's nothing stopping you from switching formats later if you want to try something different or travelling for in-person sessions proves to be too much.

For who

Who online counselling suits

Online sessions work well for people who:

  • Have a busy schedule and limited time to travel to appointments
  • Work from home and can take a session during the day
  • Have caring responsibilities that make leaving the house difficult
  • Live outside Sevenoaks but want to work with me specifically
  • Feel more comfortable in their own environment
  • Are going through a period where leaving the house feels hard
  • Are a young person who prefers the familiarity of their own space

For younger clients, I'll discuss with their parent or guardian how online sessions will be arranged, including where the young person will be during the session and how privacy can be maintained throughout.
